The irony of nuclear power

It both threatens the existence of man on earth and is the only visible force that could allow much of mankind to substantially survive.   I want to believe that the men and women who control the momentum of the oil and coal industry understand that the earth is heating up and the polar ice is melting.   They know the changes to the world we call home will threaten the survival of billions.   But they also believe our world is addicted to electric power; mankind will continue to demand it, and THUS the world we know is doomed.   I want to believe the leaders of industry think climate change is as unstoppable.   It is as inevitable as the powerful hurricane approaching our .coast or the forest fire roaring towards a dwelling.    So why not drill baby drill. I also want to believe the inevitable tsunami we call climate change will slow, then stop when and if small nuclear generators work and governments help pay for them, and industry is a...

the origins of MRNA

Image
Proteins serve a variety of functions within cells. Some are involved in structural support and movement, others in enzymatic activity, and still others in interaction with the outside world. Each cell has 20,000 sequences of nucleotides called genes.   The order of nucleotide in each tells the ribosome to make a specific chain of amino acids.   MRNA travels to the nucleus, creates a complimentary copy of a gene's nucleotides, and carries the instructions, to the ribosome. The ribosome then creates the appropriate string of amino acids.   After the chain of amino acids is fully formed it “folds”-- changes from an unstable random coil into a three dimensional structure.     If someone could create messenger RNA and deliver it to a cell, they could tell the cell to make a certain protein. Katalin Kariko, the woman who spent her life trying to learn how to control MRNA was born in 1955 in Kisújszállás, a city of 10,000, that was located 100 kilomete...
